2. Introduction as to how the Council of Nicaea has influenced Biblical interpretation today

The over pinning method of Biblical interpretation is exegesis. This means understanding a passage from the passage itself and not reading into a passage something outside of the passage which colours its plain meaning. Straight away one can see a problem with this and that is that a Bible passage is not understood in isolation to the rest of the Bible. Exegesis with the rest of the Bible in mind is the correct method of Biblical interpretation.

Today's evangelical interpretation of the Bible follows this rule, but only to some extent. I want to show how Biblical interpretation has been influenced by the Council of Nicaea. The council's remit was to consolidate Christian thought of the day which was already going wayward and had done so for at least 250 years previously. Credence is given to the Council of Nicaea by Christians today, but not a lot is said about how Christianity had already wandered from Biblical truth at that time and hence coloured the council's hermeneutics.
